Birthdays are a fantastic chance to show appreciation for our loved ones and make them feel special simply because they were born on that day.
Animals, too, deserve to be celebrated and pampered on their special day, and a 31-year-old rescued grey seal named Yulelogs at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary is the perfect example.
Yulelogs was initially rescued in 1989 by a marine park in northern England when he was just a tiny pup.
After the park closed, he was released back into the wild. According to the Cornish Seal Sanctuary’s official website, Yulelogs had grown too accustomed to humans and didn’t know how to fend for himself.
Three months after his release, the RSPCA rescued Yulelogs once again when concerned citizens reported him chasing people with buckets on the beach, thinking they contained fish.
When the seal was found, he weighed a mere 132 lbs (60 kg) instead of the normal 551 lbs (250 kg) for his species. Recognizing his need for care, the RSPCA asked the Cornish Seal Sanctuary to provide a permanent home for Yulelogs.
Now, at 31 years old, Yulelogs is a lively and beloved seal at the sanctuary, which is quite an accomplishment considering that male grey seals typically live to be around 25 years old in the wild. To celebrate this milestone, the team at Cornish Seal Sanctuary surprised Yulelogs with a massive ice cake filled with delicious fish.
Georgina Shannon, the marketing and media coordinator for the sanctuary, told The Dodo that Yulelogs was overjoyed with his birthday cake. The cake also served as a form of enrichment, challenging Yulelogs to figure out how to extract the fish from the icy treat.
