Katie Holmes’ protective instincts have kicked in.
The 45-year-old actress firmly rebutted a misleading report claiming that her ex-husband Tom Cruise had established a million-dollar trust fund for their daughter, Suri Cruise, who is now 18.
On Sunday, Holmes took to Instagram to share a screenshot of a Daily Mail article asserting that Suri’s inheritance had “kicked in” and insinuated, “mom Katie Holmes has one for her too.”
“Completely false,” she responded. “Daily Mail, you can stop making stuff up.” In her caption, she added, “Enough.”
Most commenters rallied behind Holmes’ decision to speak out.
“Always rooting for you, Katie,” one supporter wrote. Others expressed apologies and praised her as an “outstanding mom.”
However, one particular critic received a direct response from Holmes.
“Gosh, the hardships you guys face. Hey, are you worried if you can pay your rent AND eat this month? No? Yeah, me either 😅😅………. 🙄 I wish these were my problems,” the commenter remarked. “And look, I get it; I honestly don’t begrudge you for being famous and working hard for your wealth. I know you work hard, and problems are problems no matter who you are. I can only assume, but you are a great mom. And anyone can see that.”
Holmes replied: “I don’t disagree. But in today’s world, I don’t want a target on my child’s back. It’s dangerous.”
The “Dawson’s Creek” star and Cruise married in November 2006. Six years later, Holmes filed for divorce, citing her desire to shield Suri from Scientology in a 2013 deposition.
In April, Page Six reported that Suri and the “Top Gun” star remain estranged while Holmes and Suri continue to thrive in New York City.
Over the summer, Holmes expressed her pride in Suri as she prepares for college, stating, “I’m proud of my daughter. Of course, I will miss the close proximity, but I’m really proud of her and I’m happy. I remember being this age, this time of beginnings. It’s exciting to learn about yourself, and I loved that time, so it makes me happy to think about it like that.”
She humorously added, “The members of my book club are going to get annoyed hearing from me. I’ll be like, ‘Let’s meet once a week.’”
In a since-deleted TikTok video from May, Suri was seen wearing a red Carnegie Mellon University sweater as she and her classmates announced their college plans.
