Mana Srivate, a seasoned rescuer with 26 years of experience, had never performed resuscitation on an elephant—until now.

While off duty, Mana was called to assist in Chanthaburi province’s eastern region after a motorcyclist collided with a baby elephant.

The accident happened at night, and the motorcyclist couldn’t avoid the elephant crossing the road in time.

Upon reaching the scene, Mana immediately began resuscitating the baby elephant. Footage captured the moment as Mana administered first aid to the elephant while other rescuers attended to the injured motorcyclist nearby.

“Using my knowledge of human anatomy and a video I had seen online, I guessed where the elephant’s heart would be,” Mana told Reuters. “When the elephant started to move, I cried.” After about 10 minutes, the elephant stood up on its own.

It was then taken to another location for further treatment before being brought back to the accident site, hoping its mother would find it. After hearing its calls, Mana confirmed that the mother elephant soon returned for her calf.

Though Mana has handled many traffic accidents involving people, this was the first time he successfully revived an animal.
