A heartwarming tale of elephant motherhood is emerging from the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, managed by Sri Lanka’s Wildlife Conservation Department.
The sanctuary recently welcomed the addition of twin elephant calves, the offspring of a cherished resident female elephant.
The twins, looking like miniature versions of their mother, arrived in good health, to the joy of the sanctuary staff.

Living in an open enclosure equipped with a small pond, the elephant mother constantly keeps her babies close – an inherent maternal instinct that further endears her to observers.
They spend their days basking in the sunshine, grazing on the enclosure’s grass, their every move drawing fascination from onlookers. However, their journey into learning how to graze is just beginning.
These charming elephant twins have already started taking their life lessons seriously, from trying to enjoy a sand bath to copying their mother’s every action.
The twins quickly mimic whether the mother drinks water or stands silently, providing a delightful spectacle for the visitors.
In an environment that encourages natural behavior, the twins also play with each other, their doting caregiver, and the other elephant family members.
A day in their lives also includes group bath times at the nearby water source, making their world a blend of education, adventure, and fun.
