Michael Cole, celebrated for his portrayal of Pete Cochran in “The Mod Squad” and Harlan Barrett in “General Hospital,” has passed away at the age of 84.
His representative confirmed that Cole died peacefully “surrounded by his loved ones after living a full and vibrant life” on December 10, 2024.
The cause of his death has not been disclosed.
“Cole was a defining figure of his era, known for his talent and magnetic presence,” his representative stated. “The Mod Squad not only made him a household name but also broke barriers by tackling themes of racial and social justice, with Cole’s performance bringing authenticity and heart to the series.”
The actor is remembered for his kind spirit and generosity, often sharing stories from his Hollywood journey. “A true storyteller, Michael had a knack for making everyone around him feel special, often sharing wisdom from his remarkable experiences,” his representative added.
Cole’s legacy is intertwined with his groundbreaking role in “The Mod Squad,” which aired from 1968 to 1973, showcasing three undercover cops with troubled pasts combating crime in the counterculture of the time. The series not only entertained audiences but also addressed significant societal issues.
The show earned six Emmy Award nominations and four Golden Globe nominations, highlighting its impact and relevance in addressing themes of racial and social justice.
Following the conclusion of “The Mod Squad,” Cole appeared in various popular television shows, including “Murder, She Wrote,” “The Love Boat,” “Wonder Woman,” and “Fantasy Island.” He also played Harlan Barrett in “General Hospital,” showcasing his versatility as an actor.
Cole’s influence extended beyond his acting career; he authored a memoir titled “I Played the White Guy,” which chronicled his experiences in Hollywood.
Cole leaves behind his wife Shelley, children, and a broad network of friends and admirers who will cherish his memory.
