Morning Encounter: Elephant Pursues Safari Jeep in South Africa

Last Update:

A safari jeep in Balule Game Reserve, South Africa, had an unexpected encounter when an elephant chased it during a morning drive.

Safari guide Marius Zeilinga, his tracker Eric, and three guests were driving on February 6 when they spotted the elephant feeding by the roadside.

The group halted for a closer look, but Marius decided to leave as the elephant came too near for comfort. The bull elephant began pursuing the jeep, ensuring they didn’t stop.

Marius explained that the elephant was in musth at the time, a condition in which its testosterone levels were higher than usual, causing it to be more aggressive and unpredictable.

He reassured me that such behavior is not unusual during musth, and as long as a safe distance is maintained, there’s no cause for concern.

The guests were captivated by the thrilling experience, which they deemed unforgettable and likely a once-in-a-lifetime event.
