Unfortunately, not all creatures thrive in this setting, as abandoned and injured dogs struggle to survive. One such dog, paralyzed and in dire straits, embarked on a remarkable journey to seek help from humans.

Susanne Vogel was leading a team of volunteers in the Northern Okavango region, engaged in a project aimed at preventing conflicts between elephants and humans.

One day, their routine was interrupted by the sight of a dog dragging itself toward their remote camp. This persistent little dog, later named Poppy, approached the group as if asking for help.

“She practically crawled into our camp since her back legs were paralyzed. She couldn’t walk,” Susanne recounted. Despite her condition, Poppy was overflowing with love and seemed to plead for assistance.

The volunteers quickly assessed the dog’s condition. Poppy had likely been involved in an accident, resulting in a fractured spine that left her paralyzed. After providing her with food and a bath, they took her to a veterinarian, but the news was grim.

At just seven months old, Poppy’s chances for survival were slim, and surgery was deemed too risky. However, her rescuers were not discouraged. They were inspired by Poppy’s spirit and set out on a mission to support her recovery.

They began a regime of therapy and rehabilitation to help strengthen her legs while simultaneously raising funds for her medical care. Animal lovers from around the world rallied to support Poppy, eager to contribute to her recovery.

Although surgery was not an option, Poppy continued to defy the odds. She was fitted with a pair of wheels, giving her newfound freedom to move.

After hours of physical therapy, Poppy grew stronger and gained the ability to stand on her own four legs.
