Rescuing dogs is challenging work, yet it brings immense joy when a once-desperate pup begins to flourish after being saved.
Kelly Russel, along with her fellow volunteers from a Texas rescue group, knows this all too well. Their dedication was tested when they received an urgent call about a dog trapped in a tire. Swift to respond, they discovered the dog had been stuck near a rodeo for days, struggling to survive. His mobility was severely restricted, and his head was painfully swollen, signaling that he needed immediate assistance.

Kelly, part of the Three Little Pitties Rescue, was moved to tears upon first seeing the dog, aptly named Pickles. For several distressing days, Pickles had endured with his head lodged in a tire, completely helpless.
“He was in a lot of distress and clearly frightened. It’s likely he was chasing after something and ended up getting his head stuck,” Kelly explained to The Dodo.
To ensure Pickles’ safety and comfort, Kelly and her team sedated him before transporting him to the veterinarian. Once there, it became evident that removal from the tire wouldn’t be straightforward.
The team called in the local fire department, who promptly arrived on the scene. Though surprised by the situation, the firefighters knew exactly how to proceed. Using the jaws of life, they skillfully cut through the tire’s rim, and within an hour, Pickles was free at last.

“The firefighters mentioned that they had never encountered anything like this. They used the jaws of life to remove the tire rim, and a bit later, Pickles woke up—confused, but clearly relieved to be free,” Kelly recounted.
Finally unencumbered by the tire, Pickles began his journey toward recovery. Though initially shy, he seemed to appreciate being tire-free and looked forward to a fresh start.
After a brief stay at the veterinary clinic, Kelly took Pickles in as a foster pet—an excellent decision. In just a few days, he began to settle into his new environment, socialize with other dogs, and regain trust in humans. Pickles quickly embraced the joys of being a loved and cared-for pet, charming everyone he met in the process.

With his warm and gentle demeanor, Pickles was destined to find a forever home. Fortunately, he didn’t have to wait long.
Only a few months later, Pickles was adopted by a wonderful family who welcomed him wholeheartedly. He thrived in his new home, leaving his past struggles behind and embracing his new life filled with love, play, and adventures.
Today, Pickles is a happy pooch enjoying the life he truly deserves.
