Woody, the playful and affectionate pup, has a face that instantly captures hearts with its endearing, quirky charm. Courtney Bellew, the director at Special Needs Animal Rescue & Rehabilitation (SNARR) Northeast, couldn’t help but feel drawn to Woody’s unique appearance and joyful personality.
Originally from Tennessee, Woody’s distinctive face wasn’t something he was born with. Bellew explained to The Dodo that Woody’s crooked face was due to an injury when he was just five weeks old, after being attacked by another dog. Sadly, his former owners never sought veterinary help for him, leaving Woody with a permanent reminder of the incident. Despite this, Woody is otherwise healthy and a picture of happiness.
Neglect didn’t end there. Woody’s previous family deserted him, leaving him chained in their yard when they moved away. Thankfully, neighbors provided him with food until someone reached out to Bellew for help, six weeks later. Upon learning Woody’s story, Bellew immediately agreed to rescue him. She was particularly moved by Woody’s resilience—after all he had endured, he remained one of the happiest dogs she had ever encountered.
Bellew first met Woody when he arrived in New York City. She described him as “absolutely hilarious,” with a personality that perfectly matched his goofy expression. Although thought to be around eight months old, Woody behaves more like an exuberant eight-week-old puppy. His antics and affectionate nature make him irresistibly lovable.
Woody is not without his quirks. He has a tendency to chase cats and hasn’t yet mastered basic commands or manners. Bellew suspects that Woody didn’t receive much care or training in his previous home. However, she’s confident that with time and proper training, Woody’s energetic behavior will subside.
Already, Woody is showing progress in foster care, having calmed down significantly within just five days, thanks to the attentive environment of his new foster family. His foster mom, Jamie Bond, shared with The Dodo how Woody comforted her when she was unwell. Displaying a keen sense of empathy, he stayed by her side, providing comfort and companionship.
Woody, now a cherished member of his foster family, is described by Bond as a “total love bug” with a big heart. She notes how he doesn’t perceive himself to be different from the other dogs, despite his unusual appearance.
