The Rare Beauty of Albino Elephants in South Africa

Last Update:

Adine Roode, founder of HERD (Hoedspruit Elephant Rehabilitation and Development) in South Africa, recently visited the orphanage in Jabulani at the Kapama Private Game Reserve, part of the Greater Kruger National Park.

The reserve is home to a rare albino female elephant first spotted in 2010 at birth. Named Khanyisa, this pink-skinned baby elephant captured hearts with her unique appearance.

Albino elephants, distinguished by their lack of pigmentation, are extremely rare, with only about 70 known to exist worldwide.

This rarity has drawn significant global attention to the reserve, which hosts several albino elephants.

Coincidentally, another baby elephant was born at the same time as Khanyisa, though without albinism.

While the entire herd raised Khanyisa, both mother elephants now nurture their young ones individually.

The albino elephants at Kapama are nearly 11 years old and have been raised with exceptional care, ensuring their good health.

Although Khanyisa’s fellow albino elephant is somewhat sensitive to sunlight, she has adapted well to her environment, learning to thrive within the reserve’s safe confines.
