In the icy winter chill of St. Louis, a heartbreaking scene unfolded as a dog was discovered abandoned and chained behind a deserted house.
Rescuers from Stray Rescue of St. Louis came to his aid just in time, offering him a chance at a brighter future.
During a mission to locate animals in need amidst the harsh January cold, the team from Stray Rescue arrived at the uninhabited property. There, they were stunned to find a dog tethered to a small shelter, lying helplessly on the frosty ground, shivering in the biting wind.
Once likely a beloved family pet, this dog had been left alone, without access to food or warmth. “The cold wind howled and the chill hurt after just a short time outside. The cruelty of this act alone leaves us feeling cold,” shared Stray Rescue of St. Louis on their Facebook page.
Among the rescuers was Donna Lochmann, whose heart broke upon seeing the dog’s plight. “Why someone felt you deserved to suffer with that huge chain is a mystery we can’t solve. You’re free now,” the team expressed.
The dog, affectionately named Eskimo Joe, greeted his rescuers with a wagging tail, full of hope and trust despite his ordeal. With the help of the rescuers, his time of suffering came to an end. Once freed from the heavy chain using bolt cutters, Donna gently lifted Eskimo Joe into the warmth of her Jeep.
“He gazed at Donna during his freedom ride and enjoyed the heated seats,” the rescue organization noted, highlighting the simplicity of his newfound joy. Eskimo Joe then embarked on a recovery journey with a veterinary check-up revealing that he tested positive for heartworm, a condition treatable with the right medication.
Despite his troubled past, Eskimo Joe proved to be incredibly gentle and sweet, easily finding a place in a loving foster home. His foster mother described him as “the most gentle soul I have ever met. He is crate trained, potty trained, loves walks, and is very polite. He sits for food and treats, enjoys a good chin scratch, and is a cozy couch companion.”
Eskimo Joe’s transformation has been inspiring; he no longer resembles the dog once left out in the freezing cold. Although still on the lookout for a permanent home, he is now showered with the love and care he deserves in his foster family’s home.
“He is genuinely curious about the world and will enjoy walks and time outside to quietly explore now that he’s free from his chain. This sweet guy deserves the best, and we’re eager to find him a forever home,” his foster mom expressed.
Eskimo Joe’s journey showcases resilience and the power of compassion, as he patiently waits for a loving family to call his own.
