When my child rushed over to tell me they heard a kitten crying from inside a trash bin, I knew I needed to investigate. What I discovered was heart-wrenching.
A small, distressed kitten was trapped on a glue trap, its weak cries barely audible as its tiny body remained immobilized by the sticky adhesive.
Whether it was accidentally ensnared while searching for food or intentionally placed there, one thing was clear—it needed help.
Freeing the kitten posed a real challenge. The glue was exceptionally strong, and each effort to separate the tiny creature risked causing it pain.
Even chopsticks broke under the pressure as I worked. With great care and gentleness, I used my hands to gradually and patiently release it from the trap.

Once free, I placed the exhausted kitten in a cardboard box to prevent any remaining glue from affecting its eyes or fur. Bringing it home was just the start of its recovery journey.
Starved and frail, the kitten devoured the food I provided, its small body trembling with hunger. Yet, despite its ordeal, it surprised me with a display of trust, following me around the house as if already aware it was safe here.
The glue matted in its fur remained a significant issue. I turned to vegetable oil, gently applying it to the sticky areas and using wet wipes to clean away the residue.
The kitten, whom we decided to name “Nian Nian”—Chinese for “sticky”—sat patiently through three careful washes, as if understanding that I intended to help.

Once its fur was free of glue, I dried Nian Nian with a hairdryer and dressed it in a tiny sweater my wife fashioned from an old sock. Nian Nian wore it with ease, appearing more comfortable and content.
In just a matter of days, the transformation was astounding. Nian Nian turned into a playful, affectionate, and lively companion. Its once thin belly filled out healthily with regular meals, and its fur became soft and shiny.
Two weeks later, a visit to the vet for vaccinations revealed just how much it had flourished—strong, healthy, and astonishingly well-behaved.

Each day, Nian Nian continued to blossom. In the span of just 20 days, its weight nearly doubled, increasing from a frail 400 grams to a robust 740 grams. The small kitten that had once been abandoned in a trash bin was now a joyful, energetic member of our family.
Looking at Nian Nian today, I am reminded of how love and kindness can transform even the most desperate situations into something beautiful. A small life, once discarded, is now valued and cherished. In saving Nian Nian, we gained something precious—the joy of unconditional love and the profound happiness that comes from offering a second chance.
