On her way to a store in North Carolina, Valinda Cortez had an unexpected encounter with a puppy living in dire conditions. The small dog, abandoned and soaked by the rain, wore a look of despair that spoke volumes about her situation.
Realizing she needed to take immediate action, Valinda quickly stepped out of her vehicle. “My heart sank,” she recalled, noting the dog’s exposure to the harsh weather for an extended period. It was evident the puppy had been left behind, yet she appeared oddly composed given the circumstances.
Approaching with care, Valinda gained the dog’s trust. She wrapped the puppy in a blanket to offer warmth and stayed beside her for over an hour. During this time, Valinda reached out to her friend Sue Massi, who is responsible for rescuing stray animals in the area. Sue responded swiftly, arriving in under 20 minutes to transport the puppy to a nearby shelter.
Although people had previously let her down, Valinda remained hopeful. She believed that with kindness, food, and a warm blanket, the puppy would learn to trust humans once again.
Now known as Cassie, the puppy is thriving and has a newfound smile that lights up her face—a testament to her renewed belief in the goodness of people.
