Tragedy struck amidst these efforts when one of the Elephant Keepers from the Voi Rehabilitation Unit passed away suddenly while in the bush with the orphans, leaving the team in grief.
The male calf, later named Jotto, was discovered at the bottom of a well in Namunyak on March 19.
Despite unsuccessful attempts to reunite him with his mother, the DSWT stepped in for his rescue.
Jotto was transported to the Nairobi Nursery, receiving immediate medical attention to stabilize his condition, including hydration and feeding.
Jotto’s road to recovery was not without challenges. Teething and digestive complications tested his health, demanding close monitoring and care from dedicated Keepers.
Despite these obstacles, Jotto’s resilient spirit shone through, endearing him to his caregivers and fellow orphaned elephants.
With the arrival of Ambo, another robust bull under DSWT’s care, Jotto found companionship and support within the larger Nursery orphan group.
His playful and spirited nature endeared him to his new family, and he thrived under the watchful eyes of his doting caregivers.
The remarkable rescue of Jotto is a testament to the unwavering dedication of the DSWT team and the incredible resilience of the orphaned elephants in their care.
In the face of adversity and loss, Jotto’s journey stands as a beacon of hope and perseverance, inspiring all who encounter his tale of survival amidst the challenges of the wild.
