In the turbulent Kerio Valley, an elephant calf named Kerrio was discovered in dire circumstances, abandoned after a violent clash between the Pokot and Marakwet tribes.

Gunfire during the night triggered a stampede among a nearby elephant herd, leaving Kerrio stranded and vulnerable.

Local tribesmen found the distressed calf lying helplessly in the grass and quickly alerted the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS).

Given the danger in the area due to ongoing tribal conflict, the KWS organized a rescue mission by helicopter. Phil Matthews and experienced keeper Julius navigated through severe weather to reach Kerrio.

They safely transported her to a temporary refuge at a local school before continuing to the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT) Nursery in Nairobi.

Upon arrival, Kerrio’s condition was concerning. Her hind legs were nearly immobile, raising doubts about whether she would walk again.

It was unclear if the injuries were from the stampede or an earlier incident that had separated her from her herd.

Despite these challenges, Kerrio showed signs of resilience. With the help of her caregivers, she began to adapt to her surroundings and attempted short walks, which gradually grew longer as her mobility improved.

An X-ray and medical examination provided hope for recovery, though Kerrio’s journey would be slow. She found comfort in the companionship of other orphaned elephants at the nursery.

Larro, a nurturing young elephant, looked after her, while Kinyei and Naleku formed close friendships with her, providing emotional support.

Her journey, which began in adversity, continues as a reminder of the power of empathy and community among humans and animals.
