Screenwriter Brian Helgeland has disclosed the storyline for his shelved Cleopatra film, which would have starred Angelina Jolie as the famed Egyptian queen.
Helgeland, known for his work on LA Confidential, began crafting the screenplay in 2011 for Sony Pictures. Emmy winner David Fincher was set to direct, but the project never materialized.

In an interview with Inverse, Helgeland unveiled that his script blended elements of a political thriller with romance, detailing Cleopatra’s affairs with Julius Caesar and Marc Antony.
He noted a historically accurate moment involving Cleopatra’s presence during Caesar’s assassination, showcasing her influence in Roman politics.

Hollywood’s struggle to bring Cleopatra back to the screen dates back to the 1963 film starring Elizabeth Taylor, notorious for its budget overruns.
Despite recent attempts, including Patty Jenkins’ project with Gal Gadot and Denis Villeneuve’s endeavor, no new Cleopatra film has progressed beyond development.
Initially attached to the role, Jolie aimed for an authentic portrayal of Cleopatra, emphasizing her intellect and leadership over her beauty or romantic liaisons.

Helgeland’s description suggests his vision would have explored the intricate power dynamics of Ancient Rome and Egypt, with a focus on historical accuracy and political intrigue.
The allure of Cleopatra continues to captivate filmmakers and audiences alike, promising a rich tapestry of history and drama for future cinematic endeavors.
