Safeguarding Elephants: A Global Call to Action on World Elephant Day

As World Elephant Day unfolds, we face a stark reality: a mere 400,000 elephants remain in Africa today.

Beyond being a statistic, this number encapsulates 400,000 individual stories of love, loss, triumph, and hardship.

In the broader quest to secure a future for this magnificent species, it is crucial to emphasize that every elephant matters.

The year 2021 has unveiled poignant chapters in the lives of these majestic creatures. A challenging drought has swept Kenya, leaving an arid landscape.

In contrast to the abundance of 2020, this year’s poor rains have cast a shadow on the lives of elephants, highlighting their vulnerability, especially during droughts.

Despite their formidable presence, elephants become particularly vulnerable when faced with food scarcity during a drought.

Their status as apex species makes them less threatened in an ideal world, but the reality is that nature has made them fragile.

With their prolific feeding habits and poor digestion, elephants require large quantities of vegetation to sustain themselves, and the scarcity of food during a drought can have fatal consequences, especially for the young and old.

Human actions exacerbate these challenges, with climate change posing a significant threat.

Longer and more frequent droughts and extreme weather patterns create additional hardship for these wild inhabitants, who grapple with an unrecognizable and disappearing home.

Yet, amidst these dire circumstances, there is hope. Individuals are taking action across Kenya and the globe to protect the planet and ensure a future for elephants.

Ordinary people, from rangers to farmers, guides, and even children, have stepped up as heroes. With over 100 orphaned elephants under care, each owes its life to these everyday heroes.

Once touched by tragedy, these orphaned elephants are given a second chance through the love of a family, nurtured and guided by dedicated Keepers.

The ultimate goal is to see them reclaim their birthright—a life in the wild where they can thrive and contribute to the survival of their species.

The mission is clear: to rescue Kenya’s orphaned elephants and secure a viable, wild future for them and their kin.

Field-level conservation emerges as the most effective means, transforming landscapes into viable habitats, providing rapid veterinary intervention, and rejuvenating ecosystems through patrols and community partnerships.
