Venice film festivals are renowned for their grand receptions, often marked by standing ovations and tears of joy from actors.

The event’s artistic director, Alberto Barbera, recounted an unsettling incident during Johansson’s film “Under the Skin” premiere in 2013.

He revealed that the audience’s reaction included booing, nearly bringing the Marvel star to tears.

Describing it as one of the worst screenings he had witnessed, Barbera reassured Johansson that despite the initial reception, the film would eventually gain recognition and become a cult favorite.

Reflecting on the incident a year later, Johansson shared her perspective, admitting to feeling exposed and shocked by the audience’s mixed reaction of cheering and booing.

Recalling the moment, she explained, “I didn’t know how to react to it,” while her director, Jonathan Glazer, delighted at the audience’s passionate response.

Directed by Glazer, “Under the Skin” features Johansson in an otherworldly role, portraying an alien navigating human society and targeting Scottish men.

Despite the initial reception at the Venice Film Festival, the film has since garnered acclaim, illustrating the unpredictable nature of audience reactions and the journey of a film’s recognition in the industry.
