Scarlett Johansson, known for her iconic portrayal of Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow) and standout roles in films like Asteroid City and Jojo Rabbit, is stepping into a new creative role.
According to an exclusive report from Variety, Johansson is set to make her directorial debut with a film titled Eleanor the Great. Joining the cast are Jessica Hecht, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and June Squibb.
A New Direction: Eleanor the Great
Initially announced under the title Eleanor, Invisible, the film has undergone a name change. The screenplay, written by Tory Kamen—who previously worked as a production assistant on the FX series The Mick—centers on a transformative chapter in an elderly woman’s life.
Following the loss of her closest companion, the protagonist embarks on a journey of self-discovery and change.
June Squibb, an Oscar-nominated actress for her role in Nebraska (2013), stars as the lead character.
Her story takes her from a quiet life in Florida back to her home state of New York, where she begins an entirely new chapter.
Squibb’s extensive career includes nearly 100 acting credits, highlighting her versatility and talent.
Johansson’s Behind-the-Camera Vision
Scarlett Johansson not only directs but also produces Eleanor the Great in collaboration with Pinky Promise, These Pictures, and Maven Screen Media.
With more than 75 acting credits on IMDb and collaborations with acclaimed directors such as Wes Anderson, Sofia Coppola, and Christopher Nolan, Johansson’s industry experience promises a thoughtful approach to her directorial work.
While this is her first feature film, Johansson has prior experience directing a short film titled These Vagabond Shoes, featuring a musical performance by Ellie Goulding in a project supported by American Express.
Upcoming Projects and a Busy 2024
Beyond her directorial debut, Johansson remains in high demand as an actress. She will star alongside Channing Tatum and Woody Harrelson in an untitled film set during the Cold War space race.
In Featherwood, she plays a recovered addict collaborating with the FBI to dismantle a Texas-based criminal organization.
Johansson will also lend her voice to the highly anticipated prequel Transformers One, set on the Transformers’ home planet of Cybertron.
As Johansson prepares for a packed 2024, Eleanor the Great could mark the beginning of a successful career behind the camera, complementing her already remarkable contributions to the film industry. Fans are eagerly awaiting this new chapter in her journey.
