In a pivotal scene from ‘Hitchcock,’ Anthony Hopkins, embodying the role of Hitchcock himself, rehearses the infamous shower sequence with Johansson.
The pressure was on, and Johansson had to muster all her courage to act alongside Hopkins in this spine-tingling moment.
In an exclusive interview with V Magazine, Johansson shed light on her encounter with Anthony Hopkins as Hitchcock, complete with a menacing 12-inch kitchen knife.
Despite her bravery in facing this daunting task, Johansson confessed that Hopkins still managed to be terrifying, even though he was a “pussycat off-screen.” She attributed this fear to her childhood memories of watching ‘The Silence of the Lambs.’
Interestingly, it wasn’t just Johansson who felt the anxiety on set; the rest of the crew was also apprehensive, albeit for different reasons.
During the filming of this scene, a sense of unease prevailed among the crew due to the limited time available and the presence of water.
Everyone was concerned about the actor getting wet and modesty being compromised. However, Scarlett Johansson remained unfazed, echoing the fearless spirit of her character, Janet Leigh.
“I don’t care about any of that stuff,” she declared. Intriguingly, Johansson had already given an impromptu audition for her role in ‘Hitchcock’ before officially signing on.
Director Sacha Gervais arranged a meeting with the actor to discuss the project, but it quickly became an unexpected rehearsal.
Gervais said he was having a practice session with Tony Hopkins at his home for the movie’s screenplay.
Scarlett’s visit was primarily to decide whether she would commit to the film. However, things took a surprising turn as she arrived.
She expressed a keen interest in the peephole scene they were practicing, suggesting changes and even joining in the rehearsal. Eventually, Scarlett agreed to be part of the project and informed Gervais within a week.
Before taking on the role, Scarlett Johansson sought out Jamie Lee Curtis’ approval. Curtis is the daughter of Janet Leigh, whom Johansson portrayed in the film.
Johansson contacted Curtis to discuss the opportunity and was met with warmth and generosity. Curtis even shared personal stories and photos with her.
Johansson admired Curtis and acknowledged the weight of playing such a beloved figure.
In return, Curtis praised Johansson’s dedication to the role, noting her severe and respectful approach.
