Saturday Night Live (SNL) aimed at Senator Katie Britt’s intense response to President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address, featuring a surprising and comical appearance by Scarlett Johansson.
The late-night show opened with a skit that humorously dissected Britt’s speech, highlighting its theatrical nature.
Scarlett Johansson played Britt, delivering her lines from an eerily empty kitchen. She captured Britt’s wide range of emotions and dramatic storytelling, particularly focusing on a controversial human trafficking anecdote and her conspicuously shiny cross necklace.
“Tonight, I’ll be auditioning for the part of scary mom, and I’ll be performing an original monologue called ‘This country is hell,’” Johansson quipped in character, maintaining unsettling eye contact with the camera.
The parody emphasized the exaggerated drama in Britt’s speech about the future of the country and border issues.
Johansson’s portrayal mocked Britt’s emotional swings, from joy to fear to anger, reflecting criticism of Britt’s performance as insincere.
SNL also took a jab at Britt’s use of a misleading human trafficking story to criticize Biden’s border policy.
An independent journalist had noted that Britt omitted vital details about the story’s timing and location, misleading viewers to think it was recent.
Johansson’s character sarcastically reassured the audience about the story’s authenticity, except for the “year, where it took place, and who was president when it happened.”
The sketch continued to lampoon Britt’s delivery, even turning her speech into a QVC-style segment to sell Britt’s “bejeweled cross necklace” and comparing it to scenes from Jordan Peele’s psychological thriller “Get Out.”
“Kitchens are where families have the hard conversations. Like the one we’ll have tomorrow about how mommy freaked out the entire country,” Johansson joked, wrapping up the skit with a laugh.
