When a family entered their guest room, they were astonished to find a litter of kittens nestled on the bed.
Unbeknownst to them, a stray cat, heavily pregnant, had slipped into their home, likely seeking refuge from the intense summer heat.
As Shauna, the founder of Cheshire Cat Rescue, explained to Love Meow, “She did what any smart, determined mama would do.”
The mother cat gave birth to six healthy calico kittens, all safe and cozy inside the home. Surprised by the discovery, the family reached out to a local rescuer, who contacted Cheshire Cat Rescue to find a suitable place for the feline family.
Shauna and her team responded quickly, carefully setting up a humane trap to safely transport the mother, whom they named DreamCloud, and her newborn kittens.
Upon arrival at the shelter, DreamCloud was understandably cautious, showing signs of protective behavior with hisses and growls. “I had a feeling she was just being protective over her new babies,” Shauna noted.
Once settled into a quiet, temperature-controlled room lined with blankets, DreamCloud quickly took to her motherly role. She kept a close watch over her kittens, only stepping away briefly for food or the litter box.
Shauna provided gentle reassurance, speaking softly to help the wary mom adjust. Over the next few days, DreamCloud began to relax, even leaning into Shauna’s hand as she allowed gentle pets.
DreamCloud’s motherly instincts were evident—she tended to her kittens’ every need, making sure they were fed and clean.
Attentive to every sound, she hurried over if one of the kittens cried, carefully observing whenever Shauna handled them for checks or weigh-ins.
As the kittens grew, opening their eyes and starting to explore, DreamCloud remained protective, keeping them close.
With time, she also started to come out of her shell, enjoying the comforts of indoor life and showing affection toward Shauna.
DreamCloud’s journey with her kittens marks a new beginning. Once her little ones are independent, she’ll finally get the chance to live a life of her own—free from the stress of surviving on the streets and able to enjoy a comfortable, stable home.
DreamCloud may have snuck into the house that night, but it led her and her kittens to a much brighter future.
