It started as a typical Saturday for Alexandra Waychoff and her family at their ranch in North Carolina.
As they enjoyed the sunny weather and yard work, an unexpected visitor arrived: a stray pup, malnourished but friendly, ran into their driveway.

This unexpected, immediately friendly, and affectionate guest particularly bonded with Waychoff’s 11-year-old son.
The family felt an instant urge to help the needy pup, offering her food, bathing, and removing ticks from her fur.

Though unsure of the dog’s health, they made a temporary bed for her in the barn, hoping she might find her way home.
To their surprise, the following day, the pup was found curled up at their doorstep, looking sad and seemingly pleading for help. Realizing she had nowhere else to go, the Waychoffs took her to the vet.
They discovered she was a Carolina dog, a rare and ancient breed known for being feral. The vet noted she was about a year old and skinny and had intestinal worms, fleas, ticks, and a recently healed broken ankle.

Without a microchip, the Waychoffs decided to take her in, naming her Leia after the “Star Wars” character.
They began treating her for fleas and ticks, and Leia, grateful for the care, quickly bonded with the family.
Leia found solace in Waychoff’s arms, enjoying the affection and feeling secure. The more time the Waychoffs spent with Leia, the more they fell in love with her sweet personality.

Waychoff shared Leia’s journey on TikTok, hoping to inspire others to help needy animals. She hoped such stories would encourage people to open their hearts and treat all animals kindly.
Leia slowly adapted to life on the ranch and was introduced to the family’s other pets: Bo Brando, a rescue cat, and their dogs, Stella the German Shepherd and Capone the Goldendoodle. The family felt Leia’s arrival was no accident.
On May 7, 2024, Waychoff announced they had decided to give Leia a permanent home. Despite her short time with them, they felt a strong bond and believed she was meant to be with them.

Waychoff shared her joy on TikTok, expressing their commitment to giving Leia the best life possible, as she deserved to be loved and cherished.
Leia’s heart led her to the family of her dreams, and she now lives a life filled with love and care at the North Carolina ranch.
