The Elephant Who Reaches for the Sky: A Unique Feeding Strategy Captured in Zimbabwe

Published on

Faced with the challenge of reaching his lunch, a resourceful bull elephant in Zimbabwe’s Mana Pools National Park came up with an impressive solution.

Defying his usual ground-bound feeding habits, the elephant stood on his hind legs and leaned against a tree to reach the high branches, mimicking the feeding behavior of a giraffe.

Captured by Giovanni Casini, a 35-year-old wildlife photographer from Pisa, Italy, this remarkable moment highlights the elephant’s adaptability.

Casini, who currently resides in South Africa, took up photography four years ago as a hobby. He described witnessing the elephant’s unusual behavior as unforgettable.

“It was dawn, the forest was silent, and the air was filled with dust,” Casini recalled. “My friends and I were alone when we spotted the bull elephant. We followed him quietly for a while, and then suddenly, he rose onto his hind legs. Watching such a massive creature balance like that to grab an entire branch with ease was astonishing.”

Casini noted that this behavior is rare for elephants due to their immense weight. However, during the dry season, when low vegetation is scarce, elephants sometimes adopt creative methods to access food.

The photographs show the elephant stretching its trunk toward the succulent leaves, defying expectations of how these giants usually forage.

“It’s both amusing and impressive to see such a large animal performing a move so unusual of its kind,” Casini added.

This extraordinary moment not only illustrates the resilience of wildlife during challenging seasons but also offers a glimpse into the lesser-seen behaviors of one of nature’s most iconic animals.
