When an elephant takes a dip in the mud, something magical happens. It adorns itself in a coat of shimmering gold, making it stand out distinctly from the rest of the herd. The transformation is nothing short of enchanting.
As the misty, fertile plains of Central Africa unfurled before him, a lustrous elephant sauntered by, drawing all eyes.
Approximately 150 endangered African forest elephants, including this golden spectacle, descended upon a clearing in Grafton, Massachusetts, where Mr. Whittier resides. They reveled in rolling about in a patch of yellow soil, creating their own mud bath.
Heavy rain washed away the mud from most of the elephants, but the golden elephant was resolute, ensuring that every inch of its massive frame was enveloped in precious clay.
Surprisingly, the other elephants in the group seemed unfazed by the golden outlier. While the observer found the situation amusing, it appeared that the elephant wore its gilded attire with pride, unperturbed by the indifference of its companions.
From a 50-meter viewing platform, Mr. Whittier had the privilege of observing this herd of three-tonne elephants, which can reach heights of up to eight feet, during their mud bath that lasted for three hours.
Despite the conspicuousness of the golden elephant, the others continued their mud festivities without acknowledging its distinctive hue.
Mr. Whittier, a 48-year-old photographer, noted how a downpour had stripped the mud away from most of the elephants before he could capture most of his shots.
Nevertheless, he marveled at the diligence of one particular elephant that had meticulously coated itself.
This extraordinary encounter provides hope for the African forest elephant, which is teetering on the brink of extinction due to relentless poaching. Experts warn that they could vanish within a decade.
In a rare and heartening sighting, photographer Scott Whittier witnessed a massive congregation of these majestic creatures at Dzanga Bai in the Central African Republic.
Describing it as an “exceptional” experience, he emphasized the rarity of witnessing such a gathering.
Among the highlights was an elephant proudly parading its golden coat while enjoying a mud bath.
Some even claim that Dzanga Bai offers a more unique wildlife viewing experience than the renowned Serengeti National Park.
