For many safari enthusiasts, getting a close-up view of African wildlife is a dream come true. But for Garth Kew, an amateur photographer, the experience went beyond his wildest expectations when an elephant appeared right on the doorstep of his lodge.

During his stay at the Madikwe Game Reserve in South Africa, Kew was startled to find the enormous animal peering back at him through his window. Initially terrified, he quickly realized the elephant wasn’t a threat but simply passing by.

Seizing the moment, he grabbed his camera and began photographing the majestic creature from the safety of his room.

As the elephant peacefully explored the area, Kew ventured outside to capture more images, witnessing the animal basking in the sunlight.

Madikwe Game Reserve, known for its “Big Five” wildlife—lions, elephants, buffalo, leopards, and rhinos—is a haven for nature lovers.

Located along a riverbank, the lodge often attracts animals seeking water, with elephants even known to sip from outdoor showers.

Recalling the encounter, Kew said, “The elephant wasn’t lured or encouraged—it just wandered down for a drink.”

After enjoying its brief visit, the elephant leisurely made its way back into the bush, leaving Kew with a set of unforgettable photographs and memories of a lifetime.
