In a sorrowful twist of fate, a beloved elephant known as ‘Courtney’ has met a tragic end despite her previous triumphs over adversity.
The Mara Elephant Project, which is dedicated to the conservation of elephants, discovered Courtney in distress after receiving an immobility alert from her collar.
This heart-wrenching incident unfolded against the backdrop of past encounters with human-wildlife conflicts, including surviving arrow wounds.
Courtney, a mother elephant, had faced challenges in the past. Just two months prior, she underwent treatment for an arrow wound, successfully having the arrowhead removed from her left shoulder in the Musiara area.
Astonishingly, a year earlier, she survived multiple arrow shots following crop raiding, showcasing her resilience in the face of human-wildlife conflicts.
Responding to an immobility signal from Courtney’s collar, the Mara Elephant Project team hurried to the scene. To their dismay, they found her lying on her right side, displaying signs of posterior paralysis.
A fresh bleeding wound on her spine near the withers indicated a recent injury, possibly caused by spearing.
Disturbingly, she had been immobilized for at least 24 hours, prompting immediate concern.
Despite being in fair body condition, an assessment by the veterinary unit revealed the grim extent of Courtney’s disease.
The fresh injury had damaged her spinal cord, hindering functionality in her rear limbs.
Efforts to make her rise proved futile, leading to the heart-wrenching decision to euthanize her humanely.

In a poignant gesture, Courtney’s tusks were handed over to the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) security team for recording and safekeeping.
