Dogs, just like people, experience profound grief when they lose someone they love. The process of healing can take time, sometimes extending over weeks or even months, requiring a great deal of patience, reassurance, and gentle care.
This was a challenging reality for two dogs in Nuevo, California, named Debby and Gidget, who were left on their own following the death of their cherished owner, who had battled a long illness.
Left alone, the duo remained close, huddled together on a couch, mourning the only person they had ever known. Feeling lost and heartbroken, they stayed still, unsure of what to do, until a caring rescue team arrived to help them.

Doreen, who was mourning the loss of her dear friend, reached out to Hope For Paws about Debby and Gidget, the two dogs left behind. Despite her desire to comfort them, the dogs were too frightened to let her approach.
Even efforts to coax them with food and treats were in vain as they would only venture out to grab food when she wasn’t around, quickly retreating afterward.
Determined to ensure their safety, Hope For Paws rescuers, Katie McKittrick and Alex Babcock, traveled two hours from Los Angeles to meet Doreen and assess the situation.
Understanding the dogs’ fear was a natural reaction to their loss, the rescuers approached with care.

Inside the house, they discovered Debby and Gidget clinging to each other on the couch, too terrified to move. Their wide, frightened eyes spoke volumes about their sorrow.
Katie, approaching them with kindness, used a gentle lead to secure each dog. With cautious and patient handling, both dogs were soon safely placed in crates and moved from the home.
This was an emotional moment for Doreen, but she found solace knowing that Debby and Gidget now had a chance to begin healing thanks to the rescue team’s efforts.
The dogs were given initial medical attention and then placed with foster families through LA Animal Rescue, providing them a secure environment to adjust to life without their owner.

Initially, they struggled with interacting with humans, staying close to each other and reluctant to engage. However, as time passed, they began to open up.
Foster carers observed unique traits in each dog. Gidget naturally stepped into a protective role, while Debby found comfort with her sister by her side. Gidget emerged as a leader, providing protection and reassurance to Debby.
“Gidget is the more protective of the pair. She is the leader of the pack and likes to take charge. She is more vocal and hands-on.

She is very sweet and affectionate and loves to give kisses and cuddle once she gets to know you,” the Hope For Paws team shared on their website.
Months passed, and both sisters blossomed into loving companions, wagging their tails eagerly, seeking cuddles, and embracing life with their foster families.
Now, Debby and Gidget are ready to find their forever homes. With the right adopters, these resilient sisters will bring lasting love and joy into their new families’ lives.
