Get ready for an unbelievable encounter between two of Africa’s most magnificent creatures. In an astonishing wildlife sighting, a crocodile attempted to attack an elephant in the Luangwa River, only to be swung around by the elephant’s tail.
53-year-old safari guide Emmanuel Sauti captured the thrilling event on camera and shared the story with LatestSightings.com. “We were heading back to camp on our off days when we saw a commotion in the water below,” Sauti recalled. “As the sighting started playing itself out, we were able to identify the culprits: an elephant and a crocodile!”

The elephant was putting up a fight, and the crocodile wasn’t backing down either. Crocodiles usually prey on smaller antelope and fish, so it’s rare to see them attack an elephant. This could have been due to extreme hunger and desperation or overambition on the crocodile’s part.
The elephant managed to shake off the crocodile and cross the river, much to the relief of Sauti and his group. “That was one of the most exhilarating moments of my career as a safari guide,” Sauti said. “It’s not every day that you get to witness something like an elephant fighting a crocodile. These sightings are rare and precious, and it’s moments like these that make me grateful for the job that I have.”
As elephant lovers, it’s heartening to see these gentle giants hold their ground against predators. We can’t help but feel a mix of emotions, from fear to awe, when we see them in action. Hats off to Sauti for capturing this once-in-a-lifetime moment and sharing it with the world.
