In the popular imagination, African elephants often roam the vast savannahs, but around one-third of these majestic creatures live within the dense African rainforests, far from the open plains and predators like lions.

Why do these elephants leave the safety and abundance of the rainforest to gather here? Andrea Turkalo, a renowned elephant researcher, asks, “The forest provides all the food they need, so what is it that draws them out of the shadows?”

The answer lies in the special mud found in this clearing, rich in salts and volcanic minerals. These elements are crucial for the elephants, helping neutralize toxins from rainforest leaves and bark.

As Turkalo explains, “Generations of elephants have come here to prospect for these minerals and settle their stomachs.”

The elephants employ a fascinating technique to access these nutrients. They use their trunks to blow air into the mud, causing it to swirl and mix with the water.

This creates a gritty concoction that the elephants drink, obtaining the essential minerals to ease their digestive discomfort.

However, the benefits of these minerals might extend beyond digestion. Some scientists speculate that these nutrients play a role in the growth and fertility of elephants. This theory is supported by the fact that up to three thousand elephants visit Dzanga Bai annually.

Despite our growing understanding, much remains to be discovered about these elusive forest elephants.

Their annual pilgrimage to Dzanga Bai underscores the importance of this unique habitat in their lives and continues to intrigue researchers and conservationists alike.
