Nang Phaya, named after the Thai word for ‘queen’ in honor of Queen Elizabeth II, who once fed her mother Donna bananas during a visit to the zoo, is a lively three-month-old elephant. Visitors to the zoo can see Nang Phaya with her family and the other 10,000 animal residents.

Stefan Groeneveld, the zoo’s team leader, shared that the keepers wanted Phaya’s first Christmas to be fit for a queen.

They arranged a 20-foot-high forest of Christmas trees to celebrate, generously donated by The Christmas Tree Place in Berkhamsted.

The elephants enjoyed exploring, snacking, and playing around the festive trees. Phaya and her mom, grandma, and other herd members delighted in the festive fun.

Initially cautious, Phaya soon joined her family in investigating the prickly branches underfoot and skillfully using her trunk to pick them up.

This playful exploration provided valuable practice for the young elephant in developing her foraging skills, a critical ability for her survival.

The energetic and curious calf reveled in the giant Christmas trees, embodying the season’s joy.

The festive atmosphere at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo was a delight for the elephants and families who visited, eager to experience a magical day among wildlife during the Christmas season.
