On her way to work one morning, Sheena, who often admired the sprawling berry fields by the roadside, noticed something unusual.
Among the usual litter scattered near the fields, a black plastic bag appeared to be moving oddly. Initially brushing it off as debris, she felt a strong instinct to turn back.
When she did, Sheena discovered a small black dog curled up in the berry bushes. The dog appeared injured, with one leg awkwardly dangling.
Sheena’s heart sank as she realized the little dog was living in pain near the dangerous, traffic-filled road.
“I was amazed,” Sheena told The Dodo. “Her eyes widened, and I felt an overwhelming wave of relief as she looked at me.”
Gently, she tried to approach the dog, calling out repeatedly despite the noise of passing cars making it hard to hear.
The dog, however, was terrified and untrusting. Each time Sheena got close, the dog bolted deeper into the bushes.
“At some point, I lost sight of her and started to panic,” Sheena recalled. Determined not to give up, she searched tirelessly through the berry rows until she spotted the dog again.
Sheena quickly improvised a leash using her fanny pack and cautiously coaxed the frightened pup into her car. “My heart burst with joy,” she said. “I was so glad I could help her.”
Sheena named the dog Blueberry after the fields where they met. She immediately brought Blueberry to RAPS Animal Hospital, where veterinarians began treating her broken leg.
It didn’t take long for Sheena to realize she couldn’t part with Blueberry. The once-skeptical stray quickly warmed to her new environment and began showering her rescuer with affection. “She’s incredibly lovable and even a bit of a ham,” Sheena said with a laugh.
Now a cherished member of the family, Blueberry thrives in her new life. Sheena reflects on that fateful day with gratitude.
“She makes the sweetest little pixie sounds when she’s happy and gives her all in everything she does. I can’t imagine life without her.”
Thanks to Sheena’s kindness and persistence, Blueberry went from surviving on the streets to living in a home filled with love and care.
