The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Kenya focuses on rehabilitating orphaned elephants and preparing them to return to the wild. Yatta, an elephant who came to the sanctuary in 1999, was reintroduced to the wild in 2009.

Despite being separated from the sanctuary for over eight years, Yatta has maintained a strong connection with her former caretakers.

Recently, she surprised everyone by visiting the sanctuary with her newborn calf.

The moment was captured on film, with the new calf named Yoyo. The caretakers recalled a similar visit from Yatta with her first calf, a female named Yetu.

“She’s a proud momma,” said caretaker Rob Brandford in an interview with The Dodo. “In a touching display of trust and affection, Yatta brought her new baby to meet the people who helped save her.”

Bradford expressed the significance of Yatta’s visit, noting, “We not only rescued and raised Yatta but also witnessed her return to the wild and started her own family. Elephants highly value their family connections, and it’s heartwarming to see them include their human caregivers in their lives. Seeing these wild animals share their important moments with those who cared for them is always extraordinary.”

The staff at the sanctuary shared their excitement, saying, “We were thrilled when Yatta returned to her former stockades to introduce her new baby boy to us. It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate his arrival together.”
