Young Elephant Steals the Show with Playful Antics at Whipsnade Zoo

Last Update:

Elephants are known for their orderly single-file marches, often holding onto the tail of the one ahead with their trunks.

However, a young elephant at Whipsnade Zoo decided to take a more independent approach, creating a lighthearted moment for visitors.

In a video captured at the zoo, six elephants are seen walking along a path guided by zookeepers. Five maintain the traditional single-file line, but a smaller elephant with a playful spirit breaks the formation.

The young elephant, walking alongside its mother, pauses to inspect the ground with its trunk before rejoining the group. As it moves forward, it disrupts the line, momentarily breaking the chain between two elephants.

Undeterred, the youngster cheekily squeezes back into the line, much to the apparent patience of the larger elephant behind it.

The delightful moment was shared on Newsflare by a visitor who happened to be at the zoo. “We had just left the bear exhibit when we saw the elephants being guided by the keepers. It was such an unexpected and incredible sight,” the visitor shared.

“I managed to record them holding each other’s tails, which I had never seen before. The baby elephant’s antics were hilarious—it kept stopping or running off, much to the annoyance of the others!”

Whipsnade Zoo, located in Bedfordshire near Dunstable, has been a hub for wildlife enthusiasts since its opening in 1931, originally named Whipsnade Wild Animal Park.

Spanning 600 acres, the zoo is home to thousands of animals, offering visitors unforgettable encounters like this charming elephant family outing.
