Under the watchful eye of their mother, Khalila, the cubs cautiously explored their outdoor enclosure this week, stepping into the world outside for the first time. While they have yet to be named, their playful antics have already captured the hearts of many.

Once widespread across North Africa, Barbary lions faced severe threats from human activities, including hunting and persecution. Historical records suggest that they were even pitted against gladiators in Roman times.

By the middle of the 1960s, Barbary lions had disappeared from their native habitats, with only a handful surviving in the possession of the king of Morocco.

Recognizing the urgent need for conservation efforts, the Czech zoo is actively involved in a pan-European endangered species program to ensure the survival of Barbary lions in captivity.

Despite their endangered status, the global population of Barbary lions is estimated to be around 100 individuals, highlighting the importance of initiatives like the one undertaken by the Czech Zoo in preserving this majestic species for future generations.
