At Belgium’s Pakawi Park Zoo, a male African lion named Singa found himself unexpectedly taking on the role of caregiver for his five energetic cubs.

Their mother, JJ, had to be away for medical treatment after a confrontation with another lioness, leaving Singa in charge of the young ones.

Singa’s attempts at looking after the cubs were well-meaning but often humorous due to inexperience. He tried to pick them up as their mother would, but his awkwardness was evident.

Each time he got close, the cubs voiced their displeasure loudly. Nevertheless, Singa showed great patience, even when they decided to chew on his tail.

Linda Smit, a wildlife photographer, captured these charming and funny moments. She explained that JJ had been seriously injured in the fight and needed time away to recover. During her absence, Singa bravely took on the parenting duties.

The story reached a heartwarming conclusion when JJ returned fully healed and reunited with her cubs.
