These dramatic moments were captured on the banks of the Chobe River in Botswana, where a lone hippo confronted a lioness and her cubs over the remains of a young elephant’s carcass.
Grant Atkinson, a 46-year-old guide and wildlife photographer from South Africa, witnessed and photographed the spectacle.
When the solitary hippo approached, the lioness and her cubs were feasting on the elephant that had died of natural causes near the river.
Initially, the cubs fled the scene, taking a bone with them as they hid. Undeterred, the lioness stood her ground, but the hungry hippo’s persistent display of jaw-gaping aggression finally compelled her to give way. The hippo moved closer to the lioness, asserting its claim to the carcass.
In an awe-inspiring showdown, the determined hippo sent the lioness and her cubs running, leaving the prize all to itself.

For Atkinson, a seasoned photographer with nine years of experience, witnessing a hippopotamus feeding on meat was a first in his long career in the bush.
