After facing severe mistreatment, Duke the dog has finally found a loving home. His original owner spread false rumors claiming Duke was ‘diseased’ and ‘untouchable’ due to his constant coughing. Fortunately, a concerned individual alerted Rudozem Street Dog Rescue, who came to Duke’s aid.
The rescue team discovered that Duke had been chained to a truck for 10 days. His previous owner had injured his feet, leaving him unable to stand properly. Duke was left in a dire state – he was covered in his own waste, infested with fleas, and severely undernourished.
“The extent of his injuries was shocking,” Tony Rowles, co-founder of the rescue organization, shared with The Dodo. “His feet were broken, with bones floating around and ligaments completely gone.”
Upon arriving, Rowles was taken aback by Duke’s condition, remarking on how frightened the dog seemed. “The smell of ammonia was overpowering, and Duke couldn’t move at all,” Rowles recalled, describing the overwhelming scene.
Rather than taking Duke to a crowded shelter, Tony decided to bring him home, hoping a more familiar environment with his other pets would help Duke heal. There, Duke began to open up, especially bonding with Tony’s wife, Diane. “Initially, he was wary, moving cautiously,” Rowles said. “But he quickly grew attached to Diane, showing her so much love.”
Following surgery to repair his feet and experiencing genuine kindness, Duke was adopted by a compassionate woman in England. Stories like Duke’s highlight the vital work rescue organizations do in providing animals with a second chance.
