Roger Massey was drawn to help a struggling Pit Bull trying to survive alone in the woods. Despite knowing it wouldn’t be easy, he couldn’t ignore the dog in dire need.
For three weeks, Roger committed to the dog, bringing food and water every day. He also sought help from various animal rescue organizations, but initial efforts were fruitless.
The dog, later named Pappas, was hesitant and fearful of humans. Having likely endured severe abuse and neglect, he kept a safe distance from people, yet Roger was determined to help.
Roger shared on Facebook, “I bring him food and water, but he doesn’t let me get close. My dogs can approach him, but he only has three legs and shows signs of severe mistreatment.”
Although Pappas remained reserved and cautious, Roger’s persistence eventually paid off when Saving Hope Animal Rescue responded to his calls for help.
When volunteers from the rescue organization arrived, Pappas seemed to intuitively understand that his time in the wild was ending. With cautious care, they slipped a leash over him, and Pappas, exhausted, did not resist.
Upon feeling the gentle touch of his rescuers, Pappas’s initial fear gave way to reveal a loving and tender heart. Lauren Anton, Executive Director of Saving Hope Animal Rescue, expressed to The Dodo, “His eyes are so soulful and he loves to cuddle and follow his human everywhere.”
At the rescue center, Pappas underwent a thorough health examination. He was found to have severe arthritis and tested positive for heartworm. He was promptly started on medication and joint supplements. These health issues, however, didn’t dampen his spirits.
Soon, Pappas found a nurturing foster home, where he began to understand what it meant to be truly cared for and loved. This resilient dog, having overcome so much, was now en route to discovering the warmth and safety that a forever family offers.
