Leo and Moneca’s relationship weathered many storms, showcasing their enduring love right up to the end.
In 2014, Animal Defenders International (ADI) rescued Leo, Moneca, and their cubs from a circus in Peru, providing them a refuge from the harsh conditions typical of circus life.
Such environments often rely on coercive methods detrimental to lions and other animals.
Escaping the circus marked a significant turning point for Leo and his family. However, their journey to freedom was not without obstacles.
While Leo and his sons were rescued during ADI’s initial operation, the circus hindered subsequent efforts, leading to a heartbreaking separation from Moneca and their daughters, Africa and Kiara, for several months.
Luck finally turned when, six months later and 600 miles away, Moneca and their daughters were found.
Once reunited, the family embraced their freedom, cherishing their time together in their four-acre habitat. Leo’s dedication to Moneca grew even stronger when she fell ill in August. Jan Creamer, president of ADI, observed Leo’s increased protectiveness and support for his sick partner.
Exhibiting behavior typical of a caring companion, Leo comforted Moneca, encouraging her to eat and stay close throughout her illness.
Their shared moments, filled with affectionate cuddles, highlighted the depth of their connection, a bond that remained unshaken despite adversity. Sadly, Moneca, at the age of 19, passed away in September, leaving Leo to mourn her loss.
During this difficult time, Leo’s caregivers provided him with additional support to help him cope with his grief.
While the story carries a somber note, Leo’s unwavering love for Moneca is a powerful reminder of the lasting impact of love and loyalty.
