Anurag Gawande, a 24-year-old photographer, recently had a once-in-a-lifetime experience while on a wildlife safari in Tadoba National Park, Maharashtra.

His encounter with a rare black leopard, captured on camera, has mesmerized viewers worldwide.

The elusive black leopard, a melanistic variant of the common leopard, was spotted by Gawande as it stealthily crossed the road in pursuit of prey.

Melanism, the genetic mutation responsible for the black coat, results from the absence of a gene regulating melanin production.
