The zoo is holding a competition during China’s national holiday to name the three cubs, inviting the public to participate.
During their first public appearance, the playful cubs struggled to stay awake, tumbling around in their enclosure.
Despite some nursing challenges their inexperienced mother faces, breeders have assisted with the cubs’ care, ensuring they remain healthy.
Video footage released by China News shows the cubs with their distinctive black stripes and white fur.
According to the Yunnan Wildlife Park, the cubs have begun interacting with visitors simply, showing off their energetic personalities.
White tigers are a rare genetic variation of the more common orange Bengal tigers, with the white gene appearing in only about one in 10,000 births.
This rarity contributes to their limited numbers, with only about 250 white tigers in captivity worldwide.
In contrast, approximately 5,000 to 7,000 orange Bengal tigers remain in the wild, a significant decline from the estimated 100,000 at the start of the 20th century, as reported by Reuters.
This decline is mainly due to poaching, deforestation, and over-hunting of the tigers’ natural prey.
The birth of these three white tiger cubs is an encouraging step for the species. It provides hope for their continued survival and a reason for visitors to celebrate during the national holiday.
