When Brenda, a dedicated animal rescuer, heard about a lonely dog resting on an old mattress in the woods, she knew she had to act.
The dog, named Hondo, appeared anxious and frightened, so Brenda gently approached him, speaking in a soft, playful manner to reassure him.
Remarkably, Hondo sensed her good intentions and decided to follow her, eventually hopping into her vehicle.
Hondo was in dire shape when Brenda brought him to an animal shelter in Oregon.
“He definitely looked like he was in a lot of pain. His skin was obviously painful. He was completely bald,” Brenda explained to The Dodo.
Despite his initial wariness, Hondo slowly became more at ease and revealed his true personality as he received much-needed care.
Hondo suffered from a severe skin condition, so the shelter staff quickly administered medical treatment.
Soon, Hondo’s playful and affectionate nature began to emerge.
Despite spending over a month at the shelter, no one came forward to adopt Hondo. Knowing he deserved a loving home, the shelter reached out to the South Coast Humane Society (SCHS) in Oregon for help.
SCHS found Hondo a foster home the next day. Sarah and her son, Seth, welcomed him with open arms.
“I felt horrible when I saw Hondo and the condition he was in because you don’t look like that overnight. That’s years of neglect,” Sarah remarked.
Seth and Hondo quickly became best friends, enjoying playdates, cuddles, and soothing baths twice a week to treat his skin condition.
Sarah recognized that Hondo needed a home with no other dogs or only very submissive ones and minimal exercise.
Thankfully, a compassionate family saw Hondo’s potential and decided to adopt him, giving him the loving home he deserved.
Hondo is now happily living with a family that showers him with the care and attention he needs.
