Abby, the beloved family dog, vanished one summer day, leaving her owners anxious and searching. Despite their relentless efforts, including reaching out to neighbors and posting on social media, Abby was nowhere to be found. The family’s hope slowly dwindled as the weeks passed.
Then, almost two months later, on August 6, 2022, an unexpected miracle happened. A team from the Cave Research Foundation was exploring the Missouri Moore Cave System when a young boy made a startling discovery. “Daddy, there’s a puppy!” he exclaimed, pointing to the bottom of a 12-foot pit.
Initially skeptical, the adults soon realized the boy was right. They spotted a frail dog lying motionless at the base of the pit. Frank Keene, an experienced caver, was among the first to see the animal and acted swiftly alongside Rick Haley, another team member, to organize a rescue.
Frank took a photograph of the dog and set out to contact others for help. He reached out to Assistant Fire Chief Rob Calhoun, who took the initiative to show the photo to nearby residents to identify the dog’s owner. Amid this effort, a neighbor recognized Abby and alerted Jeff Bohnert, Abby’s owner.
Meanwhile, back in the cave, Rick Haley and Frank Keene devised a plan to get Abby out through the narrow opening. Recognizing her weakness, Haley placed a fluffy blanket inside an empty duffle bag, encouraging Abby to crawl in. Comforted by the softness, Abby settled in, and the rescuers began the arduous task of lifting the bag to safety.
“It was a step-by-step process,” Haley described, detailing how they coordinated to elevate Abby bit by bit until they finally emerged from the dark cave after nearly an hour and a half.
In the daylight outside, Assistant Fire Chief Calhoun took over, carrying Abby gently to her elated owners. Overwhelmed with emotion, Jeff expressed his relief and joy as he held Abby for the first time in weeks, recalling how she might have fallen through a hidden cave entrance or sinkhole.
The family’s daughter, Rachel, shared the excitement from college upon hearing the unlikely reunion. A week later, Haley visited the family again and found Abby slowly recovering. Although still frail, she had regained enough energy to bark happily, a sound that was music to Haley’s ears after the emotional rescue. Beaming with pride, Haley affirmed, “She’s going to be okay.”
